The doctrine of Signatures and Correspondences is central to the practical applications of alchemy. The idea is that all objects and formations in nature express a finite set of shapes and patterns which underlie all being and becoming. Not only matter but energy formations adhere to these patterns. In fact, consciousness is included as well. Further, all objects expressing the same basic pattern, called an archetype by certain physicists, are connected in a subtle way. The collective archetypes of human consciousness, such as Mother and birth, are specialized examples of those archetypes intrinsic to all nature. Intrinsic archetypes and collective archetypes make up the basis of all possible experience. The arts of ceremonial magick and alchemy seek to manipulate the subtle connectedness extended throughout the natural and conscious worlds to cause unusual changes to occur.
Myriads of images expressing human collective archetypes can be found among the mythos and religious practices throughout the world and time. In nature, there are three basic intrinsic archetypes: the wave, the spiral, and the dendrite.
